Our online gallery was conceived in the spring of 1999 under the artistic supervision of Kossuth Award photographer Demeter Balla. The gallery had several aims. It intended to provide a regular place for publication for outstanding contemporary artists on the new medium presenting the new ways, bringing the most important works of visual art closer to the vast number of young people using internet.
Although the link and storage space providing portals (in chronological order index.hu, internetto.hu, Datanet Online, [origo]) changed and discontinued as rapidly as usual over the internet, our Gallery evolved, extended on a monthly basis during the 8 years. Several of our exhibitors granted the right of the first publication of their new or previously unpublished works of art to our gallery.
October of 2007 marks a new phase of the development of the Gallery. Named after the founder-artistic director, Demeter Gallery has been renewed keeping its previous aims and its non-profit way of operating. The pictures have become larger and richer in detail. Our exhibitions have been updated and completed with new pictures. Each exhibiting artist has been assigned an own guestbook. Under its own name, our gallery has been moved to an independent storage place provider. Our Gallery has been integrated into the scheme of Estiskola.hu, an online community to enhance the awarenes of visual self-expression.
Meanwhile the archived exhibitions have not been lost, either. We were determined to reopen our gallery as soon as possible, so the ongoing technical renewal of the archived exhibitions is under way. New exhibitions are planned to open after the republication of the archives. From then on we return to the tradition of keeping an exhibition at the main page for a month before placing it in entirely into in the archive.
